Abstract: The debate about basic research and applied research has always played a central role in science policy and research funding. The history of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a prime example of how knowledge-driven research first yields fundamentally new insights before leading to new developments and applications. The long journey from the discovery of the nuclear spin to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as an established medical imaging technique can be clearly traced through five Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, and Medicine.
