Abstract: Among the most intensely investigated two-dimensional (2D) materials are transition metal dichalcogenides. These semiconductors possess a direct optical band gap and exhibit a strong light emission only in their monolayer form. Next to their outstanding optical properties these materials are also extremely flexible making them prominent candidates for flexible displays and opto-mechanical devices. Applying strain manipulates the optical response and thus can generate new functionalities.
