Abstract: Heterogeneous (photo-)catalysis is a key technology in the energy transition. Our research focuses on replacing noble metals in catalysts with nanostructured hybrids like 2D materials on oxides. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with elemental and vibrational spectroscopy on well-defined models gains atomic-level insights into catalytic processes. We give a short perspective on how operando STM in reactive environments offers a path to tailor-made (photo)catalysts for sustainable applications.
