Abstract: Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is now a standard method for increasing sensitivity in solid-state MAS NMR and is emerging as a sensitivity-enhancement approach in high-resolution liquid-state NMR. Although paramagnetic metal ions are promising polarizing agents alongside common (bi-)radicals, their use remains limited. This article describes the principles of metal-ion polarizing agents, with a focus on site-specific DNP enhancement in complex biomolecules and inorganic materials.
