Abstract: This review offers a comprehensible introduction to cholesteric liquid crystals which display structural coloration. It begins with a concise overview of the mechanisms behind the selective reflection of visible light, followed by a historical recap of research advancements in this area. The discussion emphasizes the advantages of self-assembly and explores potential applications. Finally, it presents the use of bio-derived liquid crystals in the creation of sustainable 1D photonic materials.
