Abstract: New particle formation in the atmosphere originates from vapor condensation into sub-nanometer clusters. This article presents recent advances showing that these clusters closely resemble atmospheric particles in both chemistry and structure. Moreover, their combination with mass spectrometry allows tracking of collisional dynamics and to quantify sticking events; key to understanding particle growth at the molecular level.
