Abstract: Gold nanoparticles occupy a central spot in nanoscience and nanotechnology because of their size- and shape-dependent optical properties, which rely on surface plasmon resonances. Although the morphology and dimensions of individual gold nanoparticles allow tailoring their optical response, new effects can be achieved when nanoparticles are in close vicinity. We discuss here various types of self-assembly, focusing on the formation of chiral nanostructures with plasmonic optical activity.
