Abstract: Political parties such as Alternative for Germany (AfD) seek to highlight the shortcomings in science and research and to question their legitimacy. Their goal is to undermine trust in scientific evidence and authorities. The AfD discredits scientific disciplines, institutions, and prominent figures. Scientists would do well to actively defend academic freedom and democracy. They should contribute their ideas and findings to the forums where societal debates take place and political decisions are made.
