Abstract: Ionic liquids are promising materials for a broad range of applications, but are limited by their comparatively high melting points and slow dynamics. By modifying the cation structure with ether chains, their liquefactions temperatures are significantly and systematically lowered and their transport properties enhanced. The origin for this desirable behavior stems from the altered cation conformation, where the ether chain shields the positively charged cation center.
